The Lineage Heritage — How NCSoft Defined the Korean MMO

From Lineage to Lineage 2 and Beyond

While Western audiences focused on Ultima Online and EverQuest, Korean studio NCSoft built an MMO empire with Lineage in 1998 and Lineage 2 in 2003. These games dominated the Korean gaming market for over a decade and influenced how a generation of Asian situs slot developers thought about online RPGs.

Castle Sieges and Power

Lineage’s castle siege system became legendary. Massive guilds would gather hundreds of players for scheduled battles to capture and hold castles. Owning a castle granted prestige, taxation rights over surrounding lands, and tremendous in-game influence.

These sieges were major events. Players took time off from work and school to participate.

The Bartz Liberation War

On the Bartz server of Lineage 2 in 2004, a single dominant alliance had monopolized power for months, abusing weaker players. A grassroots resistance movement formed, gathered support from neutral guilds, and eventually toppled the oppressors.

The Bartz Liberation War became one of the most legendary stories in MMO history, often retold as proof that even virtual societies can develop political consciousness.

Hardcore by Design

Lineage and Lineage 2 were notoriously punishing. Death penalties were severe. Grinding was extreme. PvP losses meant losing items and experience. The games demanded enormous time commitments.

This hardcore design philosophy was uniquely Korean. Western markets generally rejected it. But it built communities of extraordinary dedication.

The NCSoft Influence

NCSoft went on to develop other major MMOs including Guild Wars, Aion, Blade and Soul, and Throne and Liberty. The studio’s design DNA continued to emphasize political systems, faction warfare, and player-driven conflict.

While Lineage may not be widely remembered in Western gaming history, it is impossible to understand modern Asian online gaming without acknowledging its influence. The castle sieges, the player politics, the brutal economies — these are all part of an inheritance NCSoft created with Lineage and refined through decades of subsequent development.
